Taking care of your hair is more than just about shampoo and conditioner. Here are a few tips that will help you achieve healthy hair in a short span of time.
A lot of the time this aspect gets ignored. Natural oils in your hair can do with an occasional boost by moisturizing your scalp. Olive oil and coconut oil are great for regulating oil production in the scalp. Use three or four times a month depending on your hair type. Supplemented by Vitamin E, these oils can boost hair strength a lot.
It may sound contrary, but frequent washing with shampoo damages hair. For most of us, two or three times a week is more than enough. If your work doesn’t take you outside much, once or twice a week is also enough. On other days, simply rinse hair.
Don’t hit your scalp with hot water. It pulls out all the natural oils and leave hair dry, brittle and prone to damage.
Apply shampoo with the pads of your fingers to the scalp. Gently rub along your scalp. Never let fingernails come in contact with scalp. Don’t apply shampoo to hair; shampoo dries out hair.
After rinsing out the shampoo, pat dry hair and then apply conditioner to last third of your hair length. Apply in gentle downward strokes with fingers or wide toothed comb.
Never brush hair after washing. When hair is wet and heavy it is liable to breakage. Pat dry and remove any tangles with a wide-toothed comb. Comb from bottom upwards – from tip to root.
Stylists agree that brushing twice a day keeps hair shiny and even adds volume. But never brush stroke downwards. Always brush from tip towards root. Also, clean out your hairbrushes once or twice a month.
Studies have shown that wet hair is heavy and can cause additional stress to the proteins in its structure. But blow drying just-out-of-the-shower causes a lot of damage due to the heat. What is the solution?
Let hair dry naturally for some time. Once it stops dripping and no longer soaks a towel, set your blow dryer at low heat, hold it 3 or 4 inches away from your hair and dry with the nozzle pointing downwards.
These tips help colors, cuts and styles last for longer and your hair and scalp to stay healthy. Also, good diet and exercise are key to great hair.
